Kenya’s largest mobile money transfer service is celebrating 15 years since its inception. MPesa was launched in March 2007 by Safaricom and Vodaphone with a mission to deepen financial inclusion for customers by connecting them to affordable and helpful financial services at their convenience.
The service allows users to store money and transfer it to different channels through their mobile phones via a Sim card. Since its launch, MPesa has grown to serve over 51million clients alongside thousands of companies and agents. More than a 6.1million successful transactions are registered by Mpesa daily, evidence of how active and helpful the service is. It has also extended its wings beyond the borders of Kenya into countries like Tanzania, DRC, Mozambique, Ghana, Lesotho, and Egypt.
To celebrate this decade and a half milestone, Safaricom will be rewarding 5000 random customers and businesses. 15 customers and 15 agents will be awarded every hour for the next 15days starting 7th March to 22nd March for sending or paying money using the M-Pesa super App. The selected winner will get back 15% of the transaction value up to a maximum of sh1000. It has over 9million customers who have downloaded it and use it to complete day-to-day and occasional tasks. It connects clients to services they need every day like shopping, ticket booking, food delivery, restaurants, insurance application, and several government utilities.
As MPesa turns 15, it can boast of its continued growth since its start in 2007. Over the years, new services have been birthed like Lipa Na MPesa, Fuliza, Mshwari, and the recent MPesa Super app. These have improved the quality of service offered to people and have helped many Kenyans and their businesses. It has provided opportunities to SMEs to grow, it has helped unbanked people that cannot meet bank requirements to get loans, it has provided an individual saving platform and a saving platform in conjunction with banks. Kenyans celebrate this great innovation as it has changed the lives of many.
